Police say a woman who was working at Belmont Park was fatally stabbed early Sunday morning, and a suspect has been arrested in the case.
Police say they responded to the park around 6:30 a.m. after they received a call for a woman in need of medical assistance.
The 51-year-old Belmont Park employee was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead, according to authorities. Her identity has not been released as police notify next of kin.
Police say the woman was stabbed multiple times near one of the barns while working with a horse.
"Security became alarmed by this because the horse became free," said Nassau County Police Det. Steven Fitzpatrick. "So when they responded to see what happened to the horse, they discovered her with these multiple stab wounds."
Nassau County police say Jose Franco-Martinez, 53, was arrested at the scene and is charged with second-degree murder. He will be arraigned Monday in Hempstead.
Franco-Martinez was an apparent ex-boyfriend of the victim.
The attack comes just one week after the Belmont Stakes took place in Elmont, and crowds still piled in Sunday for more horse racing action.
