A police officer in Orange County is suing a fellow officer and a neighboring police department after a deadly chase left him with serious injuries.
Montgomery officer Kristopher Kolvenbach's truck was hit head-on by a suspect being pursued by Crawford police officer Peter Cunningham. Kolvenbach was not on duty at the time.
Police say the suspect, Louis Williams, died at the scene after speeding and failing to stop when police tried to pull him over.
Kolvenbach was seriously injured with multiple broken bones that required several surgeries.
Though Cunningham's cruiser wasn't involved in the crash, Kolvenbach is suing him and the Crawford Police Department. He is accusing them of reckless disregard, negligence and lack of proper training.
Town Supervisor Charles Carnes denies the claims, saying in a statement, "Officer Cunningham is well-trained and followed policy. It was Mr. Williams who tragically disobeyed laws and decided not to pull over."
Kolvenbach is also suing the deceased suspect, his mother and estate.
Crawford Police Chief Dominick Blasko also offered support, saying, "We stand behind our officer and the belief that it was the choice and actions of Mr. Williams that resulted in the crash."
Kolvenbach has not returned to work since the crash, and it's not clear if he'll be able to return to active duty.
Calls to Kolvenbach's attorney by News 12 for comment have not been returned.
