COLD SPRING -

State park officials have confirmed that a hiker has died after falling about 100 feet at Hudson Highlands State Park.

A group of hikers were walking inside the Washburn Trail at the state park in Cold Spring when they veered off the trail marker.

Authorities say 25-year-old Kenny Steier free climbed a rock quarry and fell to his death around 6 p.m. Thursday. They say Steier was with two other friends when he plummeted onto the rocks.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fellow hikers say the trails can be dangerous.

"It can happen to anyone, those are the risks of climbing the quarry," said Taylor Myers. "It's really unfortunate."

Authorities say Steier was from Poughkeepsie. According to his social media profile, he worked at a Bible Fellowship School.
