Vandals hit new bike program in YonkersPosted: Updated:
The newly launched dock-free bike sharing program in Yonkers seems to be having some trouble.
The Lime bikes, which can be found all over the city, have been found in some unusual locations, including in the Saw Mill River at the daylighted Mill St. Courtyard.
Pictures and video of the bikes have been circulating all over social media. Residents say it’s upsetting to see people vandalize the bike just days after the program started.
City officials say the isolated incidents of vandalism to the bikes happen all over the country whenever the bikes are launched. They say as soon as the novelty of bike-sharing wears off, so will the vandalism. City officials say there has been 1,000 trips since it began on Monday.
Company officials say all their Lime bikes are equipped with GPS and are 3G-labeled, so at all times they know where they are. Lime Bike officials tell News 12 that one percent of their bikes get vandalized nationwide.
