Sources tell News 12 that two of Mount Vernon's top commissioners could be out the door.
News 12 tried to reach Mount Vernon DPW Commissioner Joe Nigro by telephone, but he would only say he's taking a two-week vacation, and after that, his future with the city is up in the air.
Planning Commissioner Chantelle Okarter is also said to be resigning because the city isn't giving her health care benefits. Mayor Richard Thomas is threatening to sue the comptroller over the issue, saying it's a benefit every city employee receives.
Comptroller Deborah Reynolds insists that because the position is mostly funded by the Urban Renewal Agency's federal dollars, that agency should foot the bill, not the city's taxpayers.
If they do leave, they join a long list of senior staff members who Reynolds says were either fired or abruptly resigned in the chaotic two years that embattled Mayor Richard Thomas has been in office.
City officials say despite the rumor, as of now, Joe Nigro remains Mount Vernon's DPW commissioner.
