Yonkers kicks off reading campaign

YONKERS -

A new initiative is kicking off today in Yonkers to encourage young kids to read.

The “Yonkers Basics” program got its start this morning at Martin’s Barbershop on South Broadway.

In addition to barbershops  like Martin’s, boxes of books will be delivered to laundromats  and beauty salons across the city.

Local leaders and educators spent the morning distributing dozens of boxes of donated books. They say there are looking to put books wherever kids spend their time out of school.  “We want to place books in the barbershops and beauty salons, because we know that a lot of children spend a lot of time while their parents are getting their hair done,” says Yonkers Public Schools Deputy Superintendent Andrea Coddett.
