Greenburgh police: Woman used obituaries to find targets for burglary

Posted: Updated:
GREENBURGH -

Greenburgh police say a woman was using local obituaries to choose victims to rob while they were busy attending funeral services throughout various areas within Westchester County.

Officials say Latonia Shelecia Stewart, 26, was arrested after a covert surveillance operation at a residence in the Watch Hill development in Tarrytown. The family of a deceased Greenburgh resident from Watch Hill were in attendance at the funeral service when the surveillance was conducted by police.

Investigators say they noticed a pattern in the robberies - all of the people targeted were recently featured in obituaries as next of kin. All of the obituaries also featured detailed funeral arraignments.

Police said they found stolen property from a February burglary in Irvington during the arrest.

Stewart has been charged with numerous crimes including conspiracy to commit burglary. She was released on bond.
