Jury aquits man on 1 charge after convicting him of 3 others

WHITE PLAINS -

A jury has acquitted a former Rockland County man on one charge, one day after convicting him on three others.

John Brega is accused of funneling tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations to elected officials.

Brega, a former Rockland bus company operator, walked out of court on Thursday after a jury acquitted him of obstruction of justice.

It was one of five charges he faces in the federal fraud and bribery trial which has been going on for weeks.

On Wednesday, the same jury convicted Brega of mail fraud, bribery and theft of federal funds for funneling tens of thousands of dollars in campaign donations to elected officials and taking money to repair BOCES buses without doing the work.

Braga faces years behind bars after the conviction.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day said his actions were actually more egregious than the charges against him because his scheme potentially put children's lives at risk.

The jury still has another mail fraud charge to consider. They will continue deliberations on Friday morning.

The Brega Transport Company has a $70 million countywide bus contract with Rockland County that expires this year.
