VALHALLA -

A Westchester County correction officer is recovering from an attack by two inmates Friday night.

Officials say that the unprovoked incident happened around 9:45 p.m. at the Westchester Department of Corrections.

The officer was taken to Westchester Medical Center. He is being treated for head trauma and a broken nose.

Joseph Spano, commissioner of corrections, says that there will be an investigation into what led to the attack. The department will work with the district attorney and county police to ensure the two suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent.

The last time an attack on a correction officer took place was in August 2017.
