Legendary New York Mets first baseman Ed Kranepool has two failing kidneys and needs a transplant, he says.

He played in more games and got more hits at Shea Stadium than anyone else. And he was part of the 1969 Miracle Mets, who won the team's first World Series.

And now he's on both a kidney donation list and searching privately for transplants.

He says he's had a rough time in the past few years. He has diabetes and suffered a foot infection -- the same type of infection that led to the death of his iconic teammate Rusty Staub.

He survived but lost all of the toes on his left foot.

"I'm recovered," he says. "I've got a new shoe. I've got a new look on life."

If he can find a donor, the transplant will take place at Stony Brook University Hospital.
