A unique memorial was held this weekend in Maine for former first lady and Rye native Barbara Bush.

Dog lovers in Maine showed up on the beach with their canines to remember Mrs. Bush.

The owners and dogs, wearing pearls -- a staple of Barbara's wardrobe, say Mrs. Bush was down-to-earth local. "This community is amazing, very supportive to one another. And she was just such an important figure in our community. Over the years we would chat, talk about books, talk about the weather. How are the kids? How are you feeling?" says one of the attendees.

People also brought books to the beach to celebrate Bush’s passion for literacy.
