Funeral service held for man fatally shot by police
Mourners gathered Friday to attend a funeral service held for a man killed in a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn.
Funeral services for Saheed Vassell, 34, were held at St. Baptist Church nearly two weeks after he was shot and killed.
Vassell, 34, had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, according to family members.
He was killed by police on April 4, after multiple 911 callers reported he had gun.
His death led to protests and a state attorney general investigation of the police-involved shooting.
Police released surveillance video of Vassell walking up to people on the street as he appeared to point an object at them. The object turned out to be a metal pipe.
Activists are urging those touched by his life to channel their grief into action.
"Bring that energy to the steps of the special prosecutor on this case," Chaplain Zaquan Jones said.
The state attorney general’s office says it is investigating the case.
