Garbage piling up along Route 9APosted: Updated:
Garbage has been piling up along Route 9A in Westchester, from Yonkers to Ossining.
The refuse includes soda bottles, garbage bags and tires, and can be both an eyesore and harmful for the environment.
A spokesperson from the New York state Department of Transportation said they’re aware litter is a big problem on highways in Westchester and that they’re doing their best to keep them clean.
“The department's maintenance forces perform litter pick up from time to time on all state highways,” said the spokesperson. “This task is usually performed in the early spring as resources allow."
Ossining Town Supervisor Dana Levenberg said the state has a “limited number of resources and they've had to downsize over the years.”
“So unfortunately garbage is their bottom priority," said Levenberg.
To encourage residents to pitch in, the town of Ossining is having a "Stash your trash day" on May 5.
