Residents weigh in on plan to build recycling facility in Stony Point

WEST HAVERSTRAW -

Residents packed town hall in West Haverstraw to learn about a plan to build a facility that recycles New York City trash.

New Planet Energy is proposing to build the plant on Holt Drive in Stony Point. The first phase of the project includes building a facility that's able to process more than 4,500 tons of garbage a day, adding up to 100 jobs in the region. The second phase calls for building a facility to turn recycled material into diesel fuel.

"I'm concerned we are not getting all the information about environmental and traffic," says Nancy Venkatesan of Stony Point.

Haverstraw officials are also worried about the plan and say it will pollute the environment and add traffic to the already congested Route 9W.

New Planet Energy officials say they are listening to everyone's concerns and may consider modifying the plan. They say there are plans to host more community outreach forums in the future.

The Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing the proposal.
