Newburgh copes with mayor’s weekend deathPosted: Updated:
Judy Kennedy, the mayor of Newburgh who first fell in love with the city after visiting from Boise, Idaho, died this weekend. She was 73.
The cause was ovarian cancer, according to City Manager Michael Ciaravino.
She was halfway through her second term in office when she put politics aside and shifted her focus toward fighting cancer. She chose not to undergo chemotherapy.
Despite her failing health, she continued to meet with city officials at her home. She even made a video, since gone viral, where she thanked the city's residents for believing in her.
"It's been my passion, it's been my joy and also my greatest challenge to serve as your mayor," she said.
A service for Kennedy is planned for April 19 at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.
A special election to fill her office will be held in November.
