A family in Mount Vernon had a moment of terror Monday morning when a five-ton tree crashed onto their historic home.
Homeowner Ian Sharps say the tree smashed onto the roof of his home on Nuber Avenue around 7:15 a.m. as a result of high wind gusts during a destructive rainstorm.
Sharps says he was sleeping when he heard the crash, and then he heard one of his teenage sons screaming.
"I was scared,” says Sharps. “My son was screaming upstairs 'Daddy, Daddy help me.' I thought maybe his leg was trapped or broke but he said, 'no I just can't get out of my room.'"
Sharps says despite the extensive damage, no one in his family was injured. The Sharps are looking into places to stay because their home is currently uninhabitable.
The home used to belong to music icon Nina Simone decades ago.
