New Canaan Parks and Recreation considers 'dog droppings' cameras

Posted: Updated:
NEW CANAAN -

Officials at New Canaan's Parks and Recreation monthly meeting last night discussed the idea that cameras be installed at Irwin Park to catch dog owners who don't pick up after their dogs.

People leaving their dogs' messes behind has been a recurring problem in the park.

Last month, flags were used to mark where people left their dog's droppings, but the problem has continued to fester.

If the cameras were to be installed, then the police, who would be in charge of monitoring the video recordings, could match up owners to their cars and hand out tickets as needed.

"That's a pretty ridiculous idea, you know," said resident Dan Crowley. "This is a town of concerned citizens, and people know what the right thing to do is and what their responsibility is... I don't think they need the aid of a camera."

In the meantime, police say animal control officers will increase patrols in problem areas and may issue fines.

The Parks and Recreation commission says this idea is in its very early stages and had no comment about it today.
