Police recover equipment stolen from production companiesPosted: Updated:
Police recovered more than $2 million worth of stolen equipment in New Rochelle Thursday.
The equipment was found in storage units at a Cube Smart after being given over with what are believed to be fake IDs.
Police say it is part of a rental scam, with thieves targeting the film industry. They say they crooks rent gear and never return it.
Four different production companies in Brooklyn, Manhattan and New Jersey have fallen victim to the scam. The owners say they are grateful to have part of their livelihood back.
"It's hard to believe folks do that to other human beings," says owner of Fastlights John Anctil. "It's sad."
Police tell News 12 this is part of an ongoing investigation by the NYPD's major case squad along side Brooklyn's 78th Precinct and New Rochelle police. The scam extends from New York to California. They are urging companies to be more careful of who they rent to as they continue to track down the thieves.
