Bridge shut down for repairs in Rockland CountryPosted: Updated:
A key bridge in Rockland Country is shutting down until December.
The Samsondale Avenue Bridge, a main artery for the villages of West Haverstraw and North Rockland, is now closed.
The decision to shut the 40-year-old bridge comes after county officials authorized last week to bond more than $2 million to go toward replacing it. That money, officials say, won’t be coming out of taxpayers’ pockets, but will be reimbursed by the Federal Highway Administration and state.
According to local leaders, the bridge is a key part of the village's infrastructure, running over the CSX Railroad, and is in desperate need of replacement. “It's deteriorating. It's over 40 years old. It's breaking down little by little. The upkeep is tremendous on the county. It's the main thoroughfare into the village. And
it's just falling apart,” says West Haverstraw Mayor Robert D'Amelio.
The TOR #95 bus route will detour in West Haverstraw for six months as the bridge is being replaced.
