Jersey City police say that they have charged a man who allegedly vandalized a city church.

North Bergen resident Juan Matos, 38, was charged with criminal mischief and desecration of venerated objects after he allegedly destroyed a Ten Commandments tablet outside Our Lady of Victories.

The vandalism was captured on the churches surveillance system Thursday afternoon.

Church parishioners say that the church has been vandalized several other times before. This is the reason why the church installed the surveillance system.

Jersey City police say that the vandalism is not being considered a bias crime at this time.

But police in Verona are considering vandalism at a church in that town a biased act.

Verona police say that three statues at Our Lady of the Lake Church had their hands and feet cut off and their faces smashed in. The incidents were reported on Palm Sunday. Church officials say the damage may date back to February, but that snow covered up the crimes.
