Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that he's awarding nearly $11 million to several distressed areas in Westchester County.

It's all part of the governor's Restore New York Communities Initiative, which supports municipal revitalization efforts by awarding funding for projects. The hope is that it will reinvigorate downtown areas and generate new economic opportunities.

One of the projects that will receive funding is Cottage Place Gardens in Yonkers. The low-income public housing property was awarded $2.5 million to demolish, reconstruct and transform it into 500 affordable housing units.

The initiative will benefit several others spots around the county, including the Armory in New Rochelle. The Armory will receive $1 million to rebuild the roof, remove asbestos and clean up the interior.

The Village of Port Chester is also receiving $1 million to redevelop a building on North Main Street.
