This month's string of ferocious nor'easters has left Piermont's prized pier in disrepair, and the village is now hoping that funding arrives in time for the warmer months ahead.
The boardwalk, roadway and pier have all been left damaged following the storms,
"On the March 2 nor'easter, we had winds coming out of the north about 60 mph right down the river and we ended up with waves about 6 feet high that pounded the end of the pier," says Piermont Mayor Bruce Tucker.
"We're hoping to get money from either FEMA or from the state, and we're waiting and waiting, because we really want to get this rebuilt and reopened for our summer season," Tucker says.
But because Rockland County was not in a state of emergency during the early March nor'easter, the village was not on the list for financial help from FEMA. That's when state Sen. David Carlucci stepped in to help.
"I was able to secure a grant for about $40,000 to make emergency repairs, to make sure that as the season heats up and people want to come to Piermont they'll be able to access the pier," Carlucci says. "It's not just about improving the quality of life which we really enjoy here on the pier, but also about attracting people from outside the community to spend their dollars here. It really helps the economy."
Mayor Tucker hopes to have the money in hand and ready to use within the next month, and he hopes to have the project finished by Memorial Day weekend.
