Relatives of Parkland victims speak at Huntington gun protest
Hundreds of Long Islanders protested against gun violence Saturday outside Huntington Town Hall – one of many March For Our Lives events that took place nationwide.
The protest was led by Long Island high school students in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. Expelled student Nikolas Cruz confessed to killing a total of 17 students and staff members on Valentine’s Day using an AR-15.
“It's horrible, because your high school could be next. No matter where you are,” said Sara Frawley, a junior from Huntington High School.
Speakers included former Rep. Steve Israel and the relatives of 14-year-old Jamie Guttenberg and Scott Beigel, a geography teacher at Marjory Stoneman – both were killed in the shooting.
“Jaime will never be able to graduate high school, go to college, get married or have children of her own because many in this country place more value on weapons of war than the life of my niece,” said Paul Guttenberg, the victim’s uncle.
Melissa Beigel told the crowd that she “couldn’t be more proud” of her slain brother, who protected his students during the attack.
Many teenagers told News 12 that they plan on making their voices heard at the ballot box this coming November.
“If our politicians won't make gun control the top priority in their agendas, we are going to elect politicians who will,” said Max Robins, a senior at Huntington High School.
