At the Nassau County Department of Public Works headquarters in Hicksville, highway crews got busy Wednesday night as temperatures dropped, snow totals climbed and snow continued to fall.
"The snow's really picked up in intensity in the last hour," Highway Supervisor Michael Fasano said after the sun went down and snow accumulation picked up.
He also asked residents and business owners not to push their snow into the main roads, which could be dangerous.
"Our objective is to get curb-to-curb on all our roads," Fasano said. "That helps tomorrow when things start to melt."
Fasano said the county had deployed about 90 large snowplow trucks and twice as many workers for the nighttime snow-removal effort.
"Please, if you could, stay home tonight," he urged drivers.
For DPW workers, on the other hand, it was no time to go home.
Scott Urban, at the helm of a 10-wheel International plow truck, was preparing to clear Old Country Road near the county line.
"You kind of get used to it after a while," he said of the long shift.
He also urged people who do end up driving to give plows a wide berth.
"A lot of guys are up for a very long time, they get fatigued," he said. Many of them started working at 7 a.m.
