The city of Yonkers is considering fees for plastic bags at retail stores to cut back on their use.
Mayor Mike Spano said during his State of the City address Wednesday evening that plastic bags have had devastating effects on the environment.
Spano wants to require that all retail stores put a fee on every plastic bag used in the city of Yonkers.
The news didn’t going over too well with customers at a Shoprite on Prospect Street.
"Oh no, absolutely not. I don't agree. We pay enough for our groceries, the last thing we need is to pay for our bags too,” said one customer.
Spano's office told News 12 that no legislation has been drafted because it's still very early on and the fees would have to be approved by the state.
