DACA supporters march in DC as Trump seeks to blame DemocratsPosted: Updated:
Monday marked the deadline imposed by the Trump administration to end the DACA program that protects young immigrants from being deported, but the issue remains on hold because of a court challenge.
To mark the March 5 deadline anyway, DACA supporters marched in Washington to call for new protections. Some demonstrators were arrested.
DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is the policy that shields young people who were brought to the country illegally as children from being deported. President Donald Trump says it was created illegally by the Obama administration, and is leaving it up to Congress to come up with a fix.
President Trump tweeted Monday afternoon to blame Democratic lawmakers for not addressing the issue.
It’s March 5th and the Democrats are nowhere to be found on DACA. Gave them 6 months, they just don’t care. Where are they? We are ready to make a deal!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 5, 2018
The president has previously insisted that any legislation saving DACA had to be coupled with funding for his promised border wall and an overhaul of the legal immigration system.
