Catamaran to deliver fresh food across Long Island Sound

MAMARONECK -

The Derecktor Shipyards of Mamaroneck and Harbor Harvest held a keel-laying ceremony this weekend for a hybrid catamaran.

The new catamaran will deliver fresh food across the Long Island Sound for Harbor Harvest beginning in the Spring of 2019.

Officials say the catamaran will be a quicker alternative to driving. “We're trying to bring back local food to the community. The catamaran is a way to introduce local farms in Connecticut to local farms on Long Island. Where a truck, due to congestion, would take four to six hours…we can do it on the water in 30 minutes," says Bob Counkle, of Harbor Harvest.

The hybrid catamaran has the capability to carry 12,000 pounds of food across the Long Island Sound per trip.
