Yonkers city officials condemned more than 100 garages at the Crestwood Lake apartment complex as the property owner awaits a consulting firm's report on possible asbestos contamination.
But despite the public health hazard, some residents of the complex say they should have been given a chance to take out their belongings before the city posted signs warning of a $1,000 fine for entering the units.
"I understand if there's something wrong with the garages that it has to be done, but we should be able to come get our stuff out," says tenant Linda Conners.
Mike Annunziato, another tenant who is also a part-time musician, says the condemnation is affecting his livelihood. He stores his instruments in his garage.
"If I need to do a job for somebody, I can't go to work now," he says. "Because my stuff is locked in the garage."
The complex's maintenance supervisor says testing and inspections are underway, and results could come within a week.
