A 6-year-old Connecticut girl died from flu complications over the weekend, according to Norwalk Public Schools.
Reports say first-grader Emma Splan had gotten her flu shot and was taken to the doctor as soon as symptoms arose, but she was not able to fight off the illness.
People who knew Emma remember her fondly. "She had a great smile, her big blue eyes and she was always really happy to be here. She did camp, she did gymnastics, she was always a go-getter," says Hana Kim, of Tumble Jungle.
She's the second child in Connecticut to die from flu complications this season.
The CDC says the number of people seeking treatment for flu-like illnesses this year is comparable to the peak of the 2009 flu pandemic.
Meanwhile, two emergency flu clinics will be held this week in Rockland County. One will be at the Martin Luther King Multi-Purpose Center in Spring Valley from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today. The other is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Crystal Run Health care facility in West Nyack. Both offering free flu shots to working residents.
