HAVERSTRAW -

Rockland commuters got some welcome news today as the ferry service between Haverstraw and Ossining is back up and running after being non-operational since December.

Local lawmakers say the ferry is essential to many commuters in north Rockland. All they have to do is get on a boat in Haverstraw, take it across the river, then get an easy train into the city. But for the last six weeks, the ferry hasn't been running due to unsafe ice on the river. But that all changed today.

The parking lot for the Haverstraw ferry was packed this morning with cars of commuters who drove there, then hopped the 15-minute ferry to Ossining.

Many say it’s a faster and easier commute instead of taking a bus from Haverstraw to Tarrytown, which is what commuters have had to do since the ferry shut in late December. Some say the problem with the bus is that it takes over a half an hour to get to Tarrytown and is subject to traffic on the Tappan Zee—hurdles that slow down commuters who already face a long trip to New York City.

News 12 spoke to one of the ferry captains today, and he says that conditions this morning were still rough, and that there's still a lot of ice on the river. But he says the ice remaining does not pose any safety risk to riders.
