MIDDLETOWN -

A T- shirt showing a Native American individual and emblazoned with the word "Savage" has some customers outraged.

The controversial top is for sale at the Burlington Coat Factory's Middletown store.

It shows a Native American wearing a traditional feather headdress and earrings.

"It's sad that in 2018 that indigenous people are still being subjected to outright racism," says a spokesman for the Redhawk Native American Arts Council in New York.

Critics say the word coupled with the image is in poor taste. Others are downplaying the shirt.

"Savage is used as a totally different word these days," one shopper told News 12. "It's not really calling them a savage people."

Two months ago, H&M pulled a hoodie from its shelves after an ad featuring a young black model wearing it prompted similar public backlash. It read "Coolest Monkey in the Jungle."
