Health authorities in New Jersey are reporting the second death of a child associated with the flu this season.
The New Jersey Department of Health said it had been notified of the death of a 6-year-old girl from Hudson County in a New Jersey hospital on Monday. The department plans a confirmatory test.
The child was identified by family members as Nevaeh Hernandez, who was a kindergartner at Lincoln Elementary School in North Bergen. Grief counselors were brought in for any student or staff member who needs to talk.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help the girl's family pay for funeral expenses.
School officials said the school was thoroughly disinfected. The North Bergen Health Department was also providing free flu shots for students, staff and parents.
The death in December of a 4-year-old girl from the central part of the state was also flu-related.
Officials are still urging that people take precautions, such as washing or disinfecting hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home if sick (especially with a fever) and getting a flu shot. Officials said the flu season can last until May.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
