Drivers are pleading for officials to repair a pothole-plagued Hamptons road that many say has mangled their cars' rims.
They say an 8-mile stretch of Route 114 is pockmarked with potholes and crumbling asphalt. It hasn't been repaved in more than 15 years, authorities say.
Local lawmakers have been calling on the state Transportation Department to repave the entire stretch between East Hampton and Sag Harbor for the last two years. And during that time, they say the road has gotten worse.
State Assemblyman Fred Thiele says a few years ago residents had pleaded with the state to repave Flanders Road. The state, he says, kept putting off the fix until there was a fatal accident.
"We don't want to see that happen here," he says.
The repaving project would take about three months and cost about $10 million, Thiele says. He plans to meet DOT officials within the next few weeks.
The DOT says it has repaved other parts of Route 114 within the past 10 years, including one section this fall. Officials say they will "continue to make improvements as needed."
