A potentially dangerous fire at a chemical plant in Tarrytown was averted after some quick action by an employee and firefighters .
Officials say a hood to a vent caught fire in a fifth floor lab at the BASF research facility at 500 White Plains Road around 9 p.m. on Wednesday. They say an employee and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames and stop the fire from spreading to toxic materials. There were no injuries.
Due to the possible chemical danger, emergency crews from all over the area were called in to help. On the Tarrytown Fire Department Facebook page, fire officials put up a post thanking neighboring departments for the mutual aid, adding, “This is a building we are constantly playing 'what if' scenarios with, and it was good to see the training paid off during the real thing.” BASF officials tell News 12 they also have plans in place for emergency situations, and that includes working with local fire and police.
There is no word yet on what may have caused the fire.
