Julie Killian aims for GOP nod in state Senate race
Posted: Updated:Two Republicans will vie for their party's nomination at a convention Wednesday night to fill the state Senate's 37th District seat vacated when George Latimer became Westchester county executive.
One of them is Julie Killian, a former investment banker who became a stay-at-home mom before entering politics as a Rye city councilwoman.
"Things need to change in Albany," she says. "We can't keep sending the same people there and expecting better results."
She's making her second push for the state Senate. She lost two years ago to Latimer, a Democrat.
Before she can challenge state Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, the Democratic candidate, she needs to overcome former Yonkers Inspector General Dan Schorr at Wednesday's Republican nominating convention.
"Dan is a really nice guy, but I feel I'm better positioned to win this race," Killian says.
Unfazed by the Democratic tidal wave that swept county elections last November, Killian says her top priorities are tax affordability and substance abuse prevention.
"One of reasons I got back into race is because I'm worried about the legalization of marijuana," she says. "There is a lot of focus on opioids and heroin, because those are killers. But the marijuana and the alcohol are killers of dreams."
