Burglars broke into a New Rochelle jewelry store through the roof Friday morning in a heist worth about $1 million in merchandise, according to the owner's daughter.
Amanda Pappas says a group of thieves broke into her dad's downtown business, New Rochelle Coin & Jewelry, at 20 Division St.
"Clearly it's personal, and they should probably go find something better to do with their time than robbing a family business," she says.
Pappas says the alarm went off around 4 a.m., although police say they did not receive reports of any activated burglar alarms at that time.
Investigators say the thieves cut through the roof and entered a back office.
Residents say they want a larger police presence in the city's downtown area.
"This is for me, the small business, as well as the big guys -- and families and kids," says Jim Killoran, a city advocate. "We can't have enough police walking, protecting us."
