New Rochelle school board VP resigns

Posted: Updated:

A New Rochelle school board member unexpectedly resigned Tuesday as the district continues to reel from a rash of violence at the high school that left a 16-year-old girl dead.

The board's vice president Maddali Atallah stepped down citing personal reasons. Her position will be filled in a May election, and board member Jeffrey Hastie will be the interim vice president until then.

Security experts also attended the meeting to discuss the district's emergency alert system and a smartphone app that allows students to report threats anonymously.

Administrators also continue to keep the high school's campus closed, meaning students can't leave in the middle of the day for lunch or other reasons.

On Jan. 10, a classmate was arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing Valeree Schwab at a Dunkin' Donuts on North Avenue.

A 15-year-old suspect in a separate stabbing remains at large.

Meanwhile, community members say they're worried about crime and declining property values near the schools.

Dave Rosenberg says he's had unwanted visitors near his home and that he and his wife are questioning their recent move near New Rochelle High School.

"I think the solution is keeping kids in school and successfully building curriculum all day," he says. "You can solve problems by just educating."

Dora Goncalez says she's worried about sending her son to school in the district.

"I don't want to worry about him going to school or working," she says.

sorry to interrupt
