Ossining student makes finals of Regeneron Science Talent SearchPosted: Updated:
A Hudson Valley student has made it to the finals of the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search.
Skyler Jones, of Ossining High School, is one of 40 scholars who will compete for more than $1.8 million in awards from the Tarrytown-based company.
The 17-year-old beat 300 other semifinalists from around the country.
Jones studied the use of perovskite crystals as semiconductors in solar cells, the parts of solar panels used to convert sunlight into energy.
“The most important goal here is reducing our dependence on fossil fuels as a planet,” said Jones.
The finals start March 8 in Washington, D.C., and the winners will be announced on March 13.
More than 1,800 students submitted applications.
Jones is one of five finalists from New York and the only one from Westchester County.
Jones wins $25,000 from her selection as a finalist Tuesday, and she has the potential to win $40,000 to $250,000 more.
