Officials: Ice jams on Housatonic in Kent have not let up
Officials say two ice jams along the Housatonic River in Kent have not let up after more than a week.
First Selectman Bruce Adams says the water beneath the ice is flowing freely, but officials are letting nature take its course when it comes to thawing the ice. They do have a backup plan that involves finding ways to divert the water if that becomes necessary.
Adams says consistently warm weather should fully melt the ice, but the current warm temperatures during the day and and below-freezing temps at night results in one step forward and one step back.
Ideas have been tossed around that include using dynamite or cranes to break up the ice, but Adams is not necessary on board.
"I just don't see any of that working," Adams says. "And I see something as drastic as dynamiting it potentially causing big problems downstream. It might clear up the blockage, but if it were dynamited it'd have to be done towards the southern end of the blockage, of course."
With rain in Tuesday and Wednesday's forecast, flooding is also a concern. Officials said some people living along Route 7 would be evacuated if necessary.
