A group of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients gathered outside Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s Glen Rock office Friday to express their disappointment that the congressman voted with the House for a resolution to avoid the government shutdown.
The House voted Thursday to pass a government funding bill. But the bill still hasn’t passed in the Senate.
Many lawmakers had been holding out until a decision was made on the future of DACA.
"If [Gottheimer] values family, he values America--just realize this is one of the most important things that we have here. Family values,” says DACA recipient Adriana Berez. “He shouldn't be supporting something that goes against that, separating families every day.”
Gottheimer released a statement saying that he is 100 percent committed to keeping DACA recipients in the United States and that it's irresponsible to deport 800,000 young people who have every right to live in the country.
But he goes on to say, "It’s also irresponsible to shut the government down.  Unfortunately, this legislation wouldn’t have kept the Dreamers here. But voting against it would have hurt every resident of New Jersey."
The congressman also spoke with the protesters from Washington via FaceTime.
