Spano no longer seeking Latimer’s old Senate seatPosted: Updated:
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano is no longer seeking the Senate seat formerly held by Westchester County Executive George Latimer.
Spano had announced just last month he was vying for the Democratic nomination. Now, just weeks later, he's pulling out of the race.
Spano says a major factor in his decision was the party leadership's decision to move the nominating convention up to Jan. 9.
Spano said it “leaves little time to reach out to the 600 district leaders.”
He also said, “The new timing favors candidates who announced early and who have been working the district since then."
Democrats still in the race are Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick, White Plains teacher Kat Brezler and Yonkers Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer.
Republican Sarmad Khojasteh, an attorney from Bedford, is also running.
A special election is expected to be set sometime next spring.
