YONKERS -

Friends and family said goodbye Tuesday to a 21-year-old who died while in custody with the Greenburgh police last week.

The funeral for Johnathan Maldonado took place at St. Mary’s Church in downtown Yonkers.

Details around his death are still emerging, but police say they used a Taser to subdue him after he was accused of stealing a cellphone at the Best Buy in Hartsdale.

Moments later he went into cardiac arrest and died at the hospital. Police say they were told by eyewitnesses that Maldonado was seen ingesting a substance before the altercation, but family members deny the claims.

The official cause of his death is unclear, but the state attorney general has taken over the case.

Maldonado’s family is asking anyone with information about his death to contact the state attorney general.
