Alan Simon sworn in as new Spring Valley mayor

SPRING VALLEY -

A new Spring Valley mayor was sworn in Monday.

Alan Simon took the top spot from former Mayor Demeza Delhomme.

Simon announced he is reorganizing the village. He ousted a number of positions, including appointing a new village clerk.

The change came as a surprise to resident Sherry Scott, who served as clerk for 17 years.

"Mr. Simon told me he was going to keep me. Now he gets up there and is not going to keep me,” she said.

Instead, the board voted to appoint a new clerk who does not live in the village. Officials said according to a new local law, the village can hire non-residents as long as they live in Rockland County.

Simon has also said he is going to give Spring Valley the fresh start it needs, including a promise to create affordable housing and an after-school program for children.

"I'm going to be fair to everyone. Everyone has an equal shot here no matter who they are, where they came from, what they believe in,” said Simon.
