The suspect in the gunfire at the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown was arraigned on reckless endangerment and misdemeanor assault charges Wednesday in Orange County Court.
Police say Michael Perez, 27, of Pennsylvania, turned himself in Tuesday night, hours after his photo and mall surveillance video were released by authorities.
Perez is accused of firing one shot from his handgun inside the busy Galleria Mall Sunday, injuring a Goshen mother and her son who were reportedly hit by shrapnel in the incident.
The incident caused mass chaos inside the mall during one of the busiest holiday shopping weekends. Hundreds of terrified shoppers were evacuated as armed authorities stormed in.
Investigators say Perez admitted to discharging the handgun during the incident.
Authorities say Perez is a licensed gun owner with a concealed carry permit in both New York and Pennsylvania. It not immediately known how his gun went off and whether it was purposefully or accidentally discharged.
Perez pleaded not guilty and is cooperating, according to authorities. They say he handed over the gun to authorities. A judge noted Perez fled the scene and seemingly changed his appearance by shaving off his beard and mustache.
He is being held in Orange County Jail on a $5,000 bond and faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.
Perez lives with his pregnant wife and their two kids in Pennsylvania.
