NYCLU files suit against East Ramapo Central S.D. over voting practices

SPRING VALLEY -

The New York Civil Liberties Union has filed a suit against the East Ramapo Central School District over the way it elects the members of its board of education.

NYCLU filed the federal lawsuit claiming the method used by the school district to elect board members unlawfully dilutes the voices of black and Latino residents. The suit asks the court to stop the district from holding any further elections until a new system is put in place.

Residents like Hamadi Martin, of Nanuet, are happy that something is being done. The father of three says he dishes out tons of money for private school because of the struggling schools in the East Ramapo district. Martin blames the school board for allowing the schools to fail.

NYCLU members hope the suit will help change the system so that all votes will have a chance to make a difference.
