One Edison high school has been awarded a $100,000 grant thanks to the help of their science teacher.
Farmers Insurance awarded Laura Holborow a grant at John P. Stevens High School this morning as part of the Dream Big Teachers Challenge in its Thank America’s Teachers Program.
Holborow and her students submitted an idea to use solar panels to make their school’s greenhouse self-sustaining to the committee.
The science teacher says that this idea will save electricity costs and provide high-quality food to the school and the community.
Even though Holborow knew that she was chosen to be in the top five, she says she was surprised that she won.
Students at the school will now design their own solar-powered programs and then present their ideas to a board of teachers.
