Hastings-on-Hudson unveiled its new designation as a Purple Heart Village at the VFW on Warburton Avenue Saturday.
The community is joining 19 other Purple Heart towns in Westchester County.
"It's really for recognition of the men and women who served here in the armed forces for our freedom. It means a lot and it's an honor," says Post 1195 Commander Richie Pecci.
The Purple Heart designation was initially opposed by some residents because they disagree with the United States' involvement in certain wars.
Ultimately, the village board approved the designation.
