YONKERS -

A spokeswoman says Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino will not run for governor following Tuesday’s election loss to state Sen. George Latimer.

There had been speculation that Astorino, considered a rising star in the Republican Party, would challenge Gov. Andrew Cuomo next year.

The statement issued on Astorino’s behalf said, “Mr. Astorino’s focus right now is to ensure a smooth transition to the next administration. His next chapter will be a return to the private sector rather than seeking public office.”

Latimer beat the incumbent Astorino in Tuesday’s county executive race 57 percent to 43 percent.
