Hazmat fears shut down Yonkers streetPosted: Updated:
A busy intersection in Yonkers is back open at this hour after being shut down over a possible Hazmat situation.
Police and fire crews responded to the intersection of Yonkers Avenue and Prescott Street shortly after 7 a.m. today after reports of a car hitting a backpack that was in the middle of the street.
A passerby reported seeing a suspicious white cloud flying out of the backpack after impact. "That set off a whole Hazmat response. They analyzed the substance and it turn out to be muriatic acid. It’s strong acid used as a cleaner,” says Yonkers Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Ford.
Yonkers Avenue was closed for about 45 minutes as police investigated. It is unknown yet who the backpack belongs to.
