Rockland Deputy County Executive Guillermo Rosa says the crisis unfolding in Puerto Rico is very personal, and he's working with other local leaders to send help and supplies.
Rosa is from Puerto Rico, and says his family on the island has been sending pictures of Hurricane Maria’s shocking aftermath. Most of Rosa's family survived the storm, but he's worried about what's to come. Millions of people are still without water and power one week after the powerful storm tore through the island.
Rosa and several Rockland County leaders are stepping up to help the victims of Puerto Rico with a program called "Rockland to the Rescue."
For the next four days, people are being asked to drop off specific supplies, including flashlights, diapers, water and batteries. The donations will be placed into a huge tractor-trailer parked outside the Rockland Fire Training Center in Pomona. They will then be shipped directly to the island to help the people in need.
Officials say that people can drive to the fire training center and staff will be there to unload the supplies from the cars.
Donations can be dropped off starting Thursday. The drive lasts until Sunday.
